Interlochen Center for the Arts
Aaron & Helen L. DeRoy Center for Film Studies
Size: 27,000 SF
The Aaron & Helen L. DeRoy Center for Film Studies includes both the newly developed Motion Picture Arts program and a residence hall accommodating 52 students. The architecture takes its queue from the camp like architecture surrounding it but incorporates a modern edge that compliments the progressive academic program it houses. The building wings are connected with a multi-purpose space intended to be the central gathering point for students year round. A one-story interconnecting entry lobby is positioned on axis with the historic “bowl”, an open amphitheater dating back to Interlochen’s earliest days.
The difficult design task was to seamlessly house a café, study areas, and lounge space all in an area that can be transformed into a 200-seat movie theater. The resulting architecture sets appropriately into a sensitive site, creating a memorable place made by the combination of architectural precedent and innovative programmatic response.
