Integrated Science and Technology Learning Center
Traverse City, Michigan
Size: 60,000 SF
The Integrated Science and Technology Learning Center is an award-winning facility at Northwestern Michigan College. It houses classrooms and laboratories for chemistry, biology, anatomy, physics, geology, dentistry, and nursing. The nursing facility is remarkable in its simulation of a real hospital, right down to the bed-side chairs and the dental laboratories feature actual dental chairs and equipment. The building boasts extra wide hallways with built-in benches and special study enclaves to facilitate casual student interaction.
The architectural goal of this new building is to provide a show piece for the college and creating a campus focal point was one of the chief planning concepts. The design of the building focuses on views and circulation patterns that help maximize the original connections across the campus. The wide expanses of glass provide soaring views, and the muted colors and natural materials provide a connection to the natural setting amongst the trees.
